Bistrot du Nord is an absolute “must-visit” in Antwerp’s gastronomy scene. The building on Lange Dijkstraat, where the former restaurant De Zeste was located, has been given a new purpose after a thorough renovation. However, the authenticity of the interior has been preserved, allowing Antwerp North to proudly claim this stylish luxury bistro.
The creators of this project are Michaël Rewers and Caroline Stasseyns. They met at restaurant De Veehandel, Caroline’s family business. Michaël then worked his way through restaurants such as Sir Anthony van Dijck, Le petit zinc, and Radis Noir, before joining ‘t Fornuis under Johan Segers, where he was sous chef for four years. Today, Michaël and Caroline form the dynamic duo behind the culinary success of Bistrot du Nord!
The key to their success lies in the quality of the dishes, where purity and respect for the ingredients are central. Alongside French classics, traditional dishes with offal such as brains, kidneys, liver, pig’s feet, and tongue also make their appearance. With his years of experience, Michaël has a special talent for serving top-quality meat dishes, though there is always a fish dish as an alternative. On the menu, you’ll find homemade chicken liver terrine with black pudding, calf’s brain tartare, Black Angus bavette with bone marrow and Marchand de Vin sauce, and the delicious six-rib Holstein. The fresh fries, fried in beef fat, are worth a visit to Bistrot du Nord all by themselves!
That Bistrot du Nord may well be the best student of the gastro-bistro class is evidenced by years of positive feedback from culinary critics. Michaël excels in bringing a flavorful French product-driven cuisine. This, combined with a nostalgic twist, makes Bistrot du Nord a must-visit for every foodie!
It comes as no surprise that Gault Millau has named Michaël “Craftsman of the Year 2021.”
