In 2018, Bistro Julien first opened its doors, the gastro-bistro of chef Davy Devlieghere and hostess Marie-Julie Haeck. This beautifully renovated building immediately catches the eye along the Grote Baan. “De gustibus non disputandum est” – with its half-open kitchen, wooden elements, sleek tables, and black-and-white tones, you can’t help but find this restaurant contemporary, warm, and accessible to the public.
Davy honed his craft at places like Hof Van Cleve and as sous-chef at Horseele. It’s no surprise, then, that respect for the pure product is evident in all of the preparations. Add his own interpretation, and you get “the best of both worlds” on your plate.
During weekdays, there’s a business lunch starting at €36 for two dishes. In the evening, you can choose between a 4-course (€65) or 5-course (€75) tasting menu. On the menu, we spot the Brittany langoustines served as a tartare with sour cream and cucumber AND the fried version with beurre blanc and lemon verbena. Truly a celebration with the fried turbot fillet, King Crab béarnaise, mashed potatoes, and fondant leek. Finish off with a freshly made Dame Blanche.
Add to that the wonderfully spontaneous and above all empathetic service led by Marie-Julie, and you understand why this place is always well-filled.
Member of the collective Jong Keukengeweld, 14.5 points in Gault Millau, and a great review from Michelin are all more than well-deserved recognitions.
