In an inconspicuous alley behind Noordplein, a corner building stands out due to the warm light behind its large windows. Restaurant Mevrouw Meijer. Upon entering, my dining companion for the day – and all the days of my life – asks the hostess if she is Mevrouw Meijer. No, but she is a business partner. The restaurant used to be called Madame Maigret and was a wine and food establishment. After the takeover, it was renamed Mevrouw Meijer, to keep the atmosphere. We are served a lovely autumn menu for just under 35 euros.
Gerard has sautéed chanterelle mushrooms as a starter, and I have confit de canard on pumpkin puree with crispy pomegranate seeds. Then, a treat with juicy venison steak, and the dessert is wine-braised pear, ice cream, and chocolate ganache. French-country style with a personal twist, seasonal and local, charming. And closed on weekends. Then, they just enjoy doing something else, a bit of living and such.
