The Mechelsestraat in Leuven is a foodie’s paradise, and one of its highlights is wine bistro Convento. Located at the corner of Mechelse and Lei, it is the life’s work of Stéphane Godfroid. A former journalist at Belga, he opened a wine shop here several years ago, which quickly became a go-to destination for wine lovers.
The interior exudes tranquility and class—no overly sleek design, but a space with attention to detail, homeliness, and the history of the building. You can both purchase and taste wines, with Stéphane and his team guiding experts and complete novices alike with equal enthusiasm and knowledge. With over 400 selections, there is something for every taste and budget.
For the past few years, Convento has also been offering food. However, it should not be confused with the nearby deli Convento Food, which Stéphane co-founded but has since sold. At the helm in Convento Wine Bistro’s kitchen is chef Jens Maertens, whose style is relaxed, seasonal, and locally inspired. They bake their own sourdough bread and make their ice cream in-house.
With a four-course menu priced at €54, the prices are fair. Wines can be ordered by the glass or by the bottle.
Many restaurants treat wine as an extra, but at Convento, wine is the centerpiece, with dishes carefully crafted to complement it. This is what a true wine bistro should be—deliciousness in both the glass and on the plate.
A true wine bistronomy experience in the heart of Leuven. Wine Spectator recognized Stéphane and his sommelier Tom with a ‘Best of Award of Excellence’!
